Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) hearings delayed at least through July 17, 2020.

Migrant-Protection-Protocols-(MPP)-Hearings-Delayed-Another-Month-Body

Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) Hearings have been delayed at least another month, through July 17, 2020. The delay also includes postponement of all MPP related in-person document service.

This week, the Department of Justice emailed EOIR (Executive Office for Immigration Review) stakeholders and updated its site, EOIR Operational Status During Coronavirus Pandemic, to notify the public that all Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) hearings and related in-person document service have been postponed through July 17, 2020, due to continuing pandemic conditions in both the United States and Mexico.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are working together to coordinate the resumption of MPP hearings, which they believe will take place as early as July 20, 2020. Each week, the departments plan to reevaluate the conditions in both Mexico and the United States and determine if MPP hearings may resume safely. They will base their decisions on the following criteria:

  • COVID-19 levels in Mexico
  • CDC/Department of State recommendations/guidelines
  • White House criteria in “Guidelines for Opening Up America Again”
  • COVID-19 travel exposure risk assessment

What are Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) Hearings?

Please see this post, where we explain more about Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) hearings.

“MPP’s, or Migrant Protection Protocols, are protocols for the U.S. Government to return certain individuals entering or seeking admission to the U.S. from Mexico, such as asylum seekers entering without proper documentation or illegally, back to Mexico to await their Immigration Court hearings that will occur in the U.S. at a later date.”
